My name is Fatuma Abdi. I am the mother of six children and we live…
The Duwani family
The Duwani family struggled to survive in Ghana. Every year they worked hard to cultivate enough crops to feed themselves. When the harvest was meagre, they barely had enough to survive the season. Their subsistence lifestyle did not allow their four children to attend school or receive proper medical care. Today, the situation is very different thanks to the gift of a goat from the Goat Project!
Years ago, a donor gave a goat to Mawuli, the eldest Duwani son. The simple gift of a single goat began a chain reaction that has transformed the lives of the entire family. “The goat given to our child gave birth to two kids and within a span of two years we had many goats from the offspring of the first goat.” The multiplication of the initial goat allowed Mawuli to attend school and also financed his education through to college level. He is now working as a teacher himself. Mrs. Duwani shared that the goats also financed the schooling of all Mawuli’s brothers and sisters.
For the Duwani family being able to pay their children’s school fees was just the beginning of a better life as the goats also generated funds for medical care for the children. For the first time in their lives the children were able to go to a doctor when they were sick. When additional treatment was needed, the family was able to sell one of the goats to pay their medical bills.
During lean years, when the harvest was meager, the Duwanis could sell a goat at the market for money to buy food for the family. Every night, when they gather to eat, they praise God for the bounty He has provided through that first goat. When Muslim neighbors ask how they managed this amazing transformation, they quickly give thanks to God and share their testimony of God’s faithfulness.
